Recovery and Common Sense Reasoning: Principles of Nonmonotonic Theory Recovery
نویسنده
چکیده
We use common-sense reasoning to make predictions about what normally will be the case. Such reasoning is captured by using a nonmonotonic semantics selecting a set of intended models from a larger collection of models. Such a selection process, however, might fail: although a theory might have a nonempty set of non-intended models, the set of intended models might be empty. We call such a theory nonmonotonically inconsistent. In order to restore consistency, we want to recover the theory, replacing it by a closely related one that has intended models. In this paper we present some rationality postulates for recovery of common-sense theories. As a result, we show that, contrary to intuition, in most cases contractions of a common-sense theory are inadequate to restore consistency, and that the only minimal recovery operations are expansions of it. Keywords" Recovery, Common Sense Reasoning, Nonmonotonic Logic.

Recovery of (Non)Monotonic Theories
We present a framework for recovery of nonmonotonic theories, i.e. of theories that are interpreted using a nonmonotonic semantics. Recovery of a nonmonotonic theory is needed if it does not have a model under the given nonmonotonic semantics, i.e. if the theory is non-monotonically inconsistent. With classical theories, inconsistency can only be removed by contracting the current theory; for n...
متن کاملExtending Prolog with Nonmonotonic Reasoning
Nonmonotonic reasoning has been developed to capture common sense inferences. This paper considers nonmonotonic reasoning in logic programs with negation { its implementation using Prolog and its integration with Prolog execution. Even within logic programming frameworks, a variety of inferencing methods, model-theoretic semantics, and language features have been proposed for diierent forms of ...
متن کاملNonmonotonicity and Human Probabilistic Reasoning
Nonmonotonic logics allow—contrary to classical (monotone) logics— for withdrawing conclusions in the light of new evidence. Nonmonotonic reasoning is often claimed to mimic human common sense reasoning. Only a few studies, though, have investigated this claim empirically. system p is a central, broadly accepted nonmonotonic reasoning system that proposes basic rationality postulates. We previo...
متن کاملInfluencing nonmonotonic reasoning by modifier strength manipulation
Despite the current belief that much common sense reasoning is nonmonotonic in nature, research indicates that only a limited percentage of people are good at nonmonotonic reasoning. Good nonmonotonic reasoners recognize the logical strengths and weaknesses of some arguments. In the present study, we focus on differences in the probabilistic interpretation of the modifiers typically and usually...
متن کاملPsychological Investigations of Human Nonmonotonic Reasoning with a Focus on System P and the Conjunction Fallacy
Nonmonotonic reasoning is often claimed to mimic human common sense reasoning. Unfortunately, though, only a few studies investigated this claim empirically. In the present study four psychological experiments are reported that investigate three rules of System P, namely the AND, the Left Logical Equivalence LLE, and the OR Rule. The actual inferences of the subjects are compared with the coher...
